train your dog to sit inside a box
Cue
word - Box
Teach your dog to sit inside a box on cue.
Practical use - replace
the box with your dog's bed and you can get your dog to go to
her bed on cue. When there are visitors who are afraid of
dogs, ask your dog to go to her bed and provide her with toys
to keep her occupied there. Pre-requisite
What
you need
A
clicker, lots of treats and a box.
How
to teach
This is taught
using the shaping technique, which means reinforcing
something close to the desired response and then gradually
requiring more from your dog before she gets the treat.
With a clicker and lots of treats ready, place a box on the
floor near you. Using the shaping technique
-
click/treat when dog looks at
the box
-
click/treat when dog moves
towards the box
-
click/treat when dog touches
the box
-
click/treat when dog places
one paw inside the box
-
click/treat when dog places
two paws inside the box
-
click/treat when dog goes into
the box
-
click/treat when dog sits
inside the box
-
click/treat when dog sits and
stays inside the box
When dog goes into the box
reliably, attach the cue word "box" (or any other word you
want to use) just before the dog goes into the box.

Keep training sessions short,
5 minutes at a time. Dogs learn better with several short
sessions (5 minutes duration) per day than one long session
(1 hour duration).
The above process may take
several sessions or even days. You can help to quicken the
process by throwing the treat into the box after clicking to
prompt the dog into the box.
Watch the video clip below on
how I clicker trained Leica to go to a box and sit inside
the box. Video clip shows Leica midway into the process. She
is a smart girl and took only one session to get it right.
Notice in the video clip, no
sound was made by human or dog. Communication between dog
and handler was done through the clicker.
